Abuse impacts between 4 and 10% of older adults in Canada. Alarmingly, only one in five instances of elder abuse comes to the attention of those equipped to provide assistance. Is this merely the tip of the iceberg? Most likely, particularly in light of the compounding challenges posed by a rapidly expanding aging population.

Elder abuse can manifest in various forms, and recognizing the signs is crucial for intervention. Common indicators include:
Physical Signs
· Unexplained injuries, bruises, or fractures
· Signs of restraint, such as marks on wrists
· Frequent hospital visits or emergency room trips
Emotional and Behavioral Signs
· Withdrawal from social activities or family
· Sudden changes in mood or behavior
· Fearfulness or anxiety around certain individuals
Neglect Indicators
· Poor hygiene or unkempt appearance
· Malnutrition or dehydration
· Untreated medical conditions
Financial Abuse Signs
· Sudden changes in financial situation
· Unexplained withdrawals or missing belongings
· Lack of basic necessities despite available funds
Environmental Signs
· Unsafe living conditions, such as clutter or lack of heat
· Presence of hoarding or unsanitary conditions
If you suspect elder abuse, it is important to report it to the appropriate authorities or seek help from organizations specializing in elder care and protection. For Assistance Call: Seniors First BChttps://seniorsfirstbc.ca/programs/sail
